However his services  will come at a cost. Depending on the project it could also take a fair amount of time and you might be seeing a lot of this person.

You could do it yourself. If you decide to go it alone, you will need to understand a number plumbing concepts and methods to get job done without any setbacks or major problems. You do not to want finish the project and find there are leaks a month down the road. This could be very expensive to fix. Then you may have to pay an expert to fix the problem you created.

Depending on the plumbing involved, the type of knowledge needed will very. Upgrading your bathroom sink will be different that installing a new water closet (toilet). You will have to consider a number of things.

1. Material Needed To Complete The Project
2. Proper Tools To Get The Job Completed Properly and Quickly
3. Correct Method of Installing or Upgrading The Fixture
4. How To Test The System and Avoid a Plumbing Leak Disaster

Installing or Upgrading a Bathroom Sink
If are installing or upgrading a sink in your bathroom you will have a number options when it comes to the plumbing materials you can use for your water supply lines. Common choices are copper or pex (crosslinked polyethylene). PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) pipe is commonly used to build drainage and venting systems for your plumbing fixtures. Steel piping may also be used in the drainage system,

1.Copper- copper tubing is commonly used to supply potable water in many types of plumbing fixtures, However you will need to understand how to properly solder the copper tubing and any fittings you will need to install, upgrade or repair used in that fixture. If the correct method is not used you will have leaks. Cutting the copper will require the use of a special tub cutter as seen below.

2. Pex- pex is a flexible plastic tubing and relatively simple to work with. The tubing with require a special crimping tool to connect with any shut-off valves or fittings used during the installation process. The connect made using steel press sleeves copper rings, depending on the technology,. One advantage pex has over copper is that will not corrode over time.

3. PVC- this pipe is commonly used in the draining and venting systems. Length of pipe are connected with various fittings using a special glue and primer. The process is rather messy but requires no special tools. Lengths of  PVC pipe can be cut using a tape measure hack saw. The cuts must be square which can achieved by using a miter box. A specialized tool, that is meant for cutting PVC piping can also be used. But this type of tool is very expensive. Stick with a hack saw and miter box. There are also saws available, meant for cutting PVC pipe, that will not be to hard on your pocket book.

4. Metal- When upgrading or fixing the drainage pipes under washroom or kitchen you will often  be  dealing with metal pipes and fittings. The ends of the pipe and insides of the fittings will be treaded. These are screwed together using a special teflon tape which is wrapped around the treaded end of the pipe. When connecting these components be careful not to cross-thread them. as this will ruin the treads and there will be a leak.

Taking the components apart will require the use of a pipe wrench, as the pipes and fittings will have been very tightly screwed together to avoid leaks. Often two pipe wrenches will be required.

When you use a pipe wrench of any size, it is important to maintain enough gap between the back of the hook jaw and the pipe. The pressure on the two points only (the heal jaw and the teeth of the hook jaw)produces the gripping action of the pipe wrench. If a third point of contact is added (the back of the hook jaw being contact with the pipe) the gripping action is reduced or lost. Keeping a gap between the back of the hook jaw and the pipe ensures maximum gripping action and rotating force of the pipe wrench.

Using  a pipe wrench that is to large can actually cause you to make the connection between the pipe and the fitting to tight. This can damage the threads and cause a leak to occur.

Other Wrenches You Might Need To Use When Working With Steel Pipe or Components Made of Copper or Brass

Hex Wrench - the hex wrench, has smooth jaws one of which is adjustable with the use of a thumb screw, making it possible to grip flat-sided objects. The wrench is used for tightening valves and other hexagonal items and does not leave scarring of the surfaces as a pipe wrench does. The hex wrench is available in straight and off set designs.

Spud Wrench
- the spud wrench has jaws which are smooth. One of the jaws is adjustable using a thumb just like a pipe wrench or spanner. The way it grips makes it possible hold and turn flat sided objects without leaving scares.

Testing You New Plumbing Systems
Of course you must test these plumbing systems to ensure there are no leaks. The plumbing that uses steel, copper or pex can be tested with air initially. An air compressor can be used to achieve the necessary air pressure to test the lines properly. You will need to connect a pressure gauge and shut-ff valve  of at the test point to do your test. Water can be used as a final test of your copper or pex connections. The drainage using PVC will need to be tested with water.

Soapy water can applied to the connections fill with air to discover leaks. When the piping and associated fittings are being tested with water, a visual inspection will need to done, especially where the pipes connect to the fittings.
